we swam

\nin deep blue water
\nand dreamed
\nof flying
\nto faraway lands
\nunencumbered
\nby knowing
\nor the smell
\nof burning sky<\/p>\n
and we soared
\nblindfolded
\nthrough starry plains,
\nwhere skinny arms
\n(still believing
\nthey were wings),
\nsailed weightless
\nas Solitaires’ feathers<\/p>\n
And we trekked
\nwith open hands
\nover fenceless moors,
\nand flew
\nwithout radar
\nthrough wide-open
\nportals<\/p>\n
and skated
\nin the icy stillness
\nof secret galaxies
\nwhere white dwarves
\nplayed flashlight tag
\nwith the moon
\nas we tumbled
\nin red shoes
\nthrough fields
\nof flashing light,
\nhaving forgotten
\nwe were water.<\/p>\n
and we never,
\n(never once)
\nlooked back.<\/p>\n
And there were times
\n(in the beginning)
\nwhen we were
\nlighter than air …
\nformless ghosts
\ndiving into pockets of time,
\nwhere there was no need
\nto see
\nor to listen
\nor to breathe …<\/p>\n
How could we
\nhave known
\nthat the sky
\nhad stopped speaking
\nto the land
\nor that the mountaintop
\nno longer sang
\nto the stars
\nat night<\/p>\n
or that,
\nwhile we skated
\non the surface
\nof our extended stay,
\npools of blue water
\ngathered dust
\nbelow our feet<\/p>\n
and grew thirsty
\nfor heat<\/p>\n
